Sustainability
Here at Green Roots Wine, all of our wines are created with sustainability at their core, utilising our unique blend of passion for the environment, our love for wine and our years of experience in shipping wine. Every decision we have made has put the Earth first, ensuring our wine is better for the planet from grape to glass.
Green Roots is the new wine brand driven by our need to protect our planet. We are all passionate about the environment and are dedicated, individually and as a group, to force change. We had been shipping full bottles of wine (and some air), corks, wooden pallets, cardboard boxes and plenty more air, inside a container halfway across the globe for years. Astonishingly, most of those items had already crossed the world once or twice too. Change was needed, we knew that there was something we could do to make an immediate impact through the wines that we sell. Green Roots is a range of great tasting, great value wines sourced from Spain and France, designed to draw awareness to where the wine trade can reduce its carbon footprint. We do not use the term sustainability on our products lightly - one of the biggest enemies of true sustainability is greenwashing, and pledges from companies to become carbon neutral are rife. Our principles include being honest and open – we have made every decision in the creation of these wines with the Earth at the forefront of our minds. Our wines are all high quality, fresh, approachable, and vegan. Green Roots offers you the sustainable choice without having to compromise on price or quality.

Planet Mark
The Planet Mark certification means you can shop with confidence
Knowledgeable support is important, and our Planet Mark certification is invaluable. We could measure energy and emissions ourselves, but Planet Mark provides that expert backup that allows us to be scrutinised. It is important we make genuine changes, not token gestures. Planet Mark gives us confidence that we are doing the right thing, along with authenticity and evidence that will help us make progress. Establishing baseline figures provides information to monitor our impact and highlight the areas where we need to take action. Please see a link to our carbon story and Planet Mark report here.
Green Roots Wine
Our Sustainable Journey

Step One
Winery and Vineyard
It's easy to assume that vineyards are good for the Earth, but unfortunately for wine lovers, vines are not the best use of space to sequester carbon. To minimise the impact of vineyards on the Earth, we only work with wineries who are committed to low-impact, sustainable farming methods. This involves water conservation, healthy soils and Earth-friendly pest management. In the winery, we look for similar types of reductions as you'd expect to find in your home - clean, renewable energy sources, water conservation and minimal waste at every level.

Step Two
Shipping
This is where we really start to make a difference! Plenty of vineyards and wineries do everything they can, while the rest of the wine trade is comfortable maintaining the status quo. The traditional way of shipping wine involves shipping a container filled with 70% air halfway around the world - even more if you consider the bottles aren't full. This is not remotely sustainable, nor an efficient use of energy. What Green Roots do is fill a recyclable vessel with wine (which takes up over 80% of the space within a container) directly at the winery and ship it to our packaging facility in the North of England. This step alone saves over 60% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a 'normal' wine. Our wines will be shipped over water from the nearest port to the vineyard directly to the North East of England. We will never use air freight for our wines.

Step Three
Packaging
In the UK we like to think we are good at recycling and we are definitely on the right path. However, our councils aren't anywhere near as good at recycling as we'd hope, so with this in mind we've prioritised aluminium cans. We only sell the cans on our site, as this is the most sustainable way to get our wine to you. Aluminium works in a near closed loop in the UK - for every can recycled a new can is made, almost no new aluminium needs creating. We are aware that pouring and sharing wine from a glass bottle is one of the joys of wine, so we have also sourced the lightest (345g), UK produced glass bottles for our wines, which are made using approx. 67% recycled glass. Once shipped, the wine arrives at our partners, Greencroft Bottlers. They operate exclusively using energy that they have generated from wind turbines and pump geothermal water from the old mine shafts below to keep the warehouses at an ambient temperature perfect for keeping wine. The lovely team at Greencroft take the superb wine we've shipped and package it into our recycled cans, ensuring no quality is lost in the process! To purchase the bottles, please visit our retail partners at The Camden Grocer.

Step Four
Storage and Distribution
Most of our wine is kept at the same facility where the wine is packaged so we're confident in the energy production and sustainable values in play there. The rest of our wine is held at a central UK distribution hub before being sent out to you. This isn't as sustainable as we'd like, but it does reduce the average road miles travelled before it gets to your door. This is where we have the most work to do. Unfortunately the logistics chains in the UK are still largely based on HGVs and diesel vans. We are constantly searching for a more sustainable method of delivery. If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear them.... there may even be a glass of wine or two in it for you!
